ESO dropping subscription fees

Elder Scrolls Online

Elder Scrolls OnlineLess then 1 year since release, Bethesda has made the announcement in regards to Elder Scrolls Online - ESO dropping subscription fees model from the game. You will still need to purchase the game, but after having done so, the game will be free-2-play. If you haven't already done so, it's a good idea to purchase the game and create an account. Those who already have accounts will have added benefits.

ESO dropping subscription fees

When Bethesda confirmed that its Elder Scrolls Online would employ a monthly subscription model, game director Matt Firor claimed that "Going with any other model meant that we would have to make sacrifices and changes we weren't willing to make." A little less than a year after launch, Bethesda is apparently willing to make some changes, as the company announced it would be dropping the subscription model beginning with the upcoming Tamriel Unlimited update.

Beginning March 17th, PC and Mac users will no longer need to pay a monthly fee. Instead of requiring a monthly subscription, Bethesda is rolling out the optional ESO Plus program, which will give players a monthly deposit of Tamriel Unlimited's new virtual currency, access to downloadable content, and faster accumulation of experience points, gold, and crafting research. Current subscribers will be automatically rolled over into the ESO Plus program when Tamriel Unlimited goes live.

This model has worked well for LOTRO, SWTOR, and Rift. Lets hope it also works well for ESO. Those other games were resurrected with the free-2-play model which has become the new norm of today's online gaming experience.
