Drop Rates, and how they apply to item farming

Mathematical probabilities can get a little confusing sometimes. So with that in mind, here is some information:

1% drop rate means that each individual kill, you have a 1 in 100 chance to see a particular item drop. In other words, whether it’s your first try or your 500th try, your chance to see it on that kill is 1%.

If you want to experiment with the drop rate before you start farming the item, pick a number between 1 and 100 and /roll until you get it.

Killing a mob 100 times gives you a 63.4% chance to get the item.

You have a…

25% chance to see it drop within 28 kills.
33% chance to see it drop within 40 kills.
50% chance to see it drop within 68 kills.
66% chance to see it drop within 109 kills.
75% chance to see it drop within 138 kills.
99% chance to see it drop within 458 kills.

No amount of kills gives you a 100% chance to see the item.  While extremely unlikely, a 1% drop rate could mean an item won’t drop for 5,000 kills.  Looking at the chart above, you can see that with a 1% drop chance, that said item will most likely drop within 458 kills.
