Basic Strategies

The biggest challenge with mirror matches in general is that both sides have exactly the same buildings, units and technology. This means that you won’t be able to exploit any particular weaknesses of your opponent’s race. Instead you have to focus on a rock-solid economy to give you the resources you need for the costly Protoss buildings and units. If you manage to outnumber your opponent by having the better economy and therefor being able to pump out more units than him, you will have an invaluable advantage. As you will oftentimes end up in battle against very similar armies, in order to gain an edge you have to use your forces more effectively than your opponent, which brings us to the next point:

Micro Management

In order to win the Starcraft 2 Protoss vs Protoss matchup, you need to have seamless Micro management. The two essential parts are keeping your units alive as long as possible by constantly healing them and paying very close attention to the attack radius of your different units to come up with the perfect formation. Also be sure to learn at least the most important Hotkeys to divide your units into groups, which will enable you to move them much more flexible.

Counter Units

When attacking, always try to aim for the units your selected group is the most effective against. To help you come up with the right counter-units, I have compiled the following short list:
Unit – Best countered by

  • Stalker/Immortal – Zealot
  • Zealot/Carrier – Sentry
  • Void Ray/Carrier – Stalker
  • Stalker/Colossus – Immortal
  • Zealot/Sentry – Colossus
  • Immortal/Colossus – Void Ray
  • Immortal/Colossus – Carrier
  • Immortal/Colossus – Mothership
  • Sentry – High Templar
  • Zealot/Stalker – Dark Templar

Please note that all these counter-units are merely based on stats and should only serve as a rough guideline. It is still essential to come up with a well-balanced unit mix, especially against more experienced opponents who will crush you if they find out that you are particularly imbalanced.

I have shown you some basic strategies, Micro Management tips and how to counter each Protoss unit. If you follow the Starcraft 2 Protoss vs Protoss Strategies in this article, you should be ready to dominate this matchup very soon.
