The Secret World: Subscription Optional model (F2P)

In a move, much like Guild Wars 2, The Secret World will now have a optional subscription to the game. This means that to access most of the content, you can purchase the game and play for free. Periodically you can purchase a content expansion pack (next one will be released Jan 2013). This will give you some new content about every 1-3 months which will cost around $5 and be considered optional. You will have all the expansions upto this point if you purchase it via Funcom’s Store, it will run you $30. Optionally, you can get The Secret World via Amazon for $22-$26.

Note: You must purchase the game prior to December 31st, in order to get the first 5 content packages for free. Currently there are 4 out, but one will be released in a few days as well.

Now when they said optional, they meant you could still get one. If you do get a subscription, it will run you about $10-$15 a month depending on the length of time you purchase (more time is cheaper price). As a subscription paying member you will get a $10 credit to the store every month. Now if you plan to purchase a year’s subscription for $120, and you get a $120 store credit, that almost makes it free. Add in a 10% discount to the purchase price of items, and you actually make money on the deal. Plus you get all the content expansions for free.

There is still a lifetime membership option as well, and you get all the same benefits and content as you do with the monthly/yearly subscription… however paying for 1 year versus the 2 that most MMOs tend to last might be a tenuous offer. If the price is offered at say the rate of 18 months, and you genuinely like the game, then we say go for it. If not, then you might want to stick with the 3, 6, or 12 month subscription plan.
