Anti-Malware Anti-Virus – Who is top dog now? Avast? AVG?

The renowned Austrian antivirus testing organization AV-Comparatives published the first real-world protection test in its 2013 test series.

The test included 422 live samples obtained by accessing websites that point to malware or use exploits to infect, as well as malicious email attachments. This provides a good overview of the typical everyday risks that users may face.

Here are the results of the test...

You will notice from the chart that Emsisoft's Anti-Malware received top honors (along with 4 others). So I decided to test out their anti-malware program. The first thing I did, was did a scan. Now the weird part here, is that I had just rand CCleaner and Spybot Search & Destroy within the last day. And yet, Emisoft found traces of uninstalled programs. It found files and registry issues which must have been in my computer for ages, since I can't even remember when I took out some of the program traces it found.

One of the things which I found interesting, is that viruses don't really affect computer that much anymore. It's really more malware. In fact only .5% of infections these days are attributed to viruses. Of course .5% globally is a big number, but it made me rethink - why am I using Anti-Virus software? Well Avast still got some pretty good reviews, even though it needed that human touch to catch everything.

The only complaint I actually have with this software, is that it can't search in RAR and 7z archives. It was able to search within zip archives, so that actually brought about it finding more things then Avast or Spybot, yet again.

I have not completely explored Emsisoft's Anti-Malware, but I did not see offhand, an option to Sandbox. Since I do use Sandboxie (nagware), it's not something really need, but for those who don't have Sandboxie, it might be a welcome addition. I will now be removing Avast & Spybot. I may - though I haven't yet fully decided - also remove CCleaner. Further tests will be needed for that however.

What does Emsisoft's Anti-Malware do for you?

Combined with the live cloud-verification of the Emsisoft Anti-Malware Network it is our ultimate weapon against specialised and sophisticated malware attacks that others can't protect you from.
